What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus refers to an internal perception of noise which has no external source. People often describe it as a ringing in the ear; however it can be heard as a whistling, hissing or pulsating sound. People who experience tinnitus can either hear it in one or both ears or hear it centrally in the head. It can be constant or intermittent and the intensity/loudness of it can vary.

Tinnitus in itself is not a disease, but can be a symptom of an underlying Auditory Condition. Other causes include exposure to loud sounds and underlying hearing loss.

How we can help

Although there is not always a definitive cure for tinnitus, there are many treatment options available. These include

  • Hearing aids when there is a hearing loss
  • Sound therapy and sound generators
  • Relaxation and stress management.

The initial assessment will include

  • A full Audiological history
  • Otoscopy- looking in your ears
  • Hearing test- Pure tone Audiometry, tympanometry etc.
  • Referral letter to your GP if further investigation is required
  • An individualised management plan to best manage and treat the tinnitus.
