Feedback and hearing aids
By Hassan Saleem
Hearing aid technology allows us to enjoy hearing a variety of sound. However the feedback stigma attached to this wonderful technology puts many people of wearing hearing aids. No one wants a discrete digital hearing aid device which admits a high pitched noise!
Below are the 3 common causes of hearing aid feedback.
- Impacted ear wax
- Poor fitting domes and moulds
- Inserting you ear piece incorrectly into your ear canal
I recently saw a patient who was fitted with custom made completely in the canal (CIC) hearing aids. He was experiencing feedback whenever he was eating or chewing. The feedback got so intense he was unable to wear his hearing aids until he contacted IHearClear. I examined his ears and there was no ear wax present. However the meatus (the part which enters into the ear canal) was far too short which resulted in the sounds leaking out from his ear whenever he moved his jaw. The shape of ear canal can change when you move your jaw. I decided to take an open mould impression and asked Oticon to remake his custom hearing aids. The importance of a good impression is vital for any custom made hearing aids as each ear canal is unique.
I followed up the appointment after having his hearing aids re-made and he is no longer experiencing any feedback and was very happy with the outcome of the appointment. Please see his video testimonial below.
